If you need a roomy, powerful SUV to chauffeur your family around in Lansing, KS, the new Dodge Durango is just the ticket. This midsize SUV seats seven people and offers potent V8 engine options. The new Toyota Highlander is also a popular three-row SUV, but it doesn’t have as much to offer Kansas City drivers as the Durango. Mainstreet Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram developed the following comparison to explain why.

Performance

Power/Acceleration

You can merge onto I-35 in Overland Park easily with the new Dodge Durango. It comes standard with a 295-horsepower V6 engine, but two V8 motors are available, including a 475-horsepower engine that cranks out 470 pound-feet of torque. When equipped with the larger V8, the Durango can bolt from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds.

The new Toyota Highlander has only one engine – a 295-horsepower V6. It takes more than seven seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

Towing Capability

Leavenworth, KS drivers who often pull boats or campers to Clinton Lake will appreciate that the new Dodge Durango can tow up to 8,700 pounds when properly configured. It’s optional Tow N Go package includes a Class IV trailer hitch receiver and load-leveling rear shock absorbers that give it outstanding towing capability.

The new Toyota Highlander has a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds.

Interior

Passenger Space

If you enjoy taking your family to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO, make sure you have an SUV that’s spacious enough for everyone to be comfortable. The new Dodge Durango has roomy seating in all three rows, including 33.5 inches of legroom in the third row.

The Toyota Highlander seats up to eight people in three rows, but the third row is best left for children. There is only 27.7 inches of third-row legroom in the Highlander.

Cargo Space

If you frequently load up your SUV with shopping bags from Oak Park Mall near Olathe, cargo space is important. The new Dodge Durango has 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row, 43.3 cubic feet of room with those seats folded down, and 85.1 cubic feet of space with all the rear seats folded.

The new Toyota Highlander doesn’t have as much room. It offers 16 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back row, 48.4 cubic feet of space with the third row folded, and a total of 84.3 cubic feet of room with all the back seats down.

Technology

Infotainment System

The new Dodge Durango comes with the Uconnect infotainment system, which is one of the most user-friendly systems on the market. Its large icons, sharp graphics and intuitive menu structure make it a cinch to operate while you’re driving through Lansing. Standard features in the Durango include an 8.4-inch touch screen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The new Toyota Highlander also comes with Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity, but it only comes standard with an 8-inch touch screen.

Push-Button Start

Digging your car keys out of your pocket or purse can be a pain. Kansas City, KS drivers will like that the Dodge Durango comes standard with push-button start, so there’s no need to grapple with getting the keys out when you drive.

Push-button start is just optional in the Toyota Highlander, so you have to pay more to add it.
